Conversion Rate Optimization

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is a set of best practices that get people to do something on your website.

What website visitors do depends on the goals you have. Some goals are:

  • Getting people to make a purchase (or better yet, a few purchases)
  • Encouraging people to put items in their shopping carts
  • Having people make inquiries about your services
  • Following you on social media

In other words, you want people to visit your site, and do something, not just look around and leave.

Conversion Rate Optimization Practices

If converting website visitors into customers was easy, everyone would be doing it.  CRO involves a combination of design tricks, catchy language and data analysis.

At SEO Design Chicago, we regularly educate ourselves about the latest CRO tactics. More importantly, we understand how website visitors think, and what they do.

We know the tricks that increase your CRO including:

  • Having a clear navigation menu
  • Making obvious and bold calls to actions
  • Highlighting time limited offers
  • Clearly displaying reviews from satisfied customers

The Math Behind CRO

If math isn’t your strong suit, that’s OK. We have a simple formula to help you better understand CRO.

CRO is calculated by dividing the number of visitors who do what you want them to do by the total number of visitors to your website and that multiplying the result by 100 to get a percentage.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say one of your goals is getting people to sign up for your  monthly email newsletter.

We’ll embed tools into your website that calculate how many people sign up during a specific frame.

Then we’ll divide that number by your total website visitors during that time frame.

We multiply that number by 100 and voila …that’s your conversion rate.

Let’s say we discover that 50 people signed up for your email newsletter in the last fiscal quarter, and 2000 people visited your site. Then your conversion rate would be 2.5%.

What’s a Good Conversion Rate?

Well, the answer to this question depends on who you ask.

In general, the higher the conversion rate, the better.

But you also have to be realistic about your goals and understand that the conversion rate will be different for each of your goals.

According to the latest research from February of 2023, the average conversion rates across ecommerce businesses was 1.64%.

But that’s across all ecommerce websites. Some categories of websites did better than others. For example, the conversion rate for sites selling arts and crafts was 4.0%.

At SEO Design Chicago, we don’t just look at the numbers. We try to figure out the “why” behind the numbers. For example, in February, temperatures across the United States are cold. When people stay inside more, they busy themselves with arts and crafts, especially around Valentine’s Day.  help you figure out your conversion rate. We help you analyze

The data we give you, and our logic, helps you in the short-term and long-term. For example,  now that you know this sales trend about February, you may  alter your marketing strategies and product offerings next February.

There are dozens of tools that exist that can help your website’s conversion rate. SEO Design Chicago can help you select the most effective ones for your website. We’ll activate the tools on your site, and help you understand the results they produce.
