Here are the steps for how to set up a filter for unknown bots in Google Analytics: 

  1. Create a new GA view: First, create a new view to test your changes on and make sure everything is working the way you want it to. 
  2. Review the bot: Next, figure out what your bot traffic has in common, like the hostname, city, or IP address. 
  3. Go to the Admin panel in Google Analytics for your new view, and select “Filters” under the “View” column on the right.
  4. Click “Add Filter.” 
  5. Give your filter a name. 
  6. Set up your filter. Depending on which factor you use to filter out your bot, you might need to use a predefined or custom filter. 
  7. Select “Exclude” and use the “Filter Field” dropdown to choose the type of dimension you wish to filter out. Then, enter the text you’re using to identify bot traffic in the “Filter Pattern” box. 
  8. Make sure to click “Save.” 
  9. Finally, make sure your filter works. It might take up to 24 hours, so in a day or so, check back and compare data from your new testing view to your preferred view. You will still see the bot traffic your preferred view, but not in your testing view.
